The first post in the thread that is linked to above shows you how to correctly list your websites. Their is also an example so you can just copy others. Make sure to include what you want people to do in order for them to get a free backlink. It would be unfair not to include any rules and then mark everyone as spam for not correctly posting about a subject or for being off topic. Although poster must be aware whats decent and understand that its quality content the owner is after.

I think one area where people go wrong is making all their backlinks using the same method. Reading different guides provides differing methods, thus different kinds of links, and a more varied (better) link profile.
I think many people worry too much about the quantity of links. A few good links from high PR sites should carry much more weight, and take less time to build.
